Silly Billy’s Big Move

Silly Billy’s Big Move started today

We would firstly like to Publicly thank all those people that helped us with the move today, Alan from the local paper shop, Les from Something Sweet (best sweet shop in Hebden), Kevin from Bluemoose Books, Alex from goodness knows where, and Dave the driver and provider of the Van. Also Bill for working all day and George (Bill’s son) for working after college.

So we have got a lovely counter now installed in the shop plus all the products that were stored at Welcome Independent Living and in Our Pop Up Shop, thanks again to Mark Coup.

The author was very busy moving stock and helping with the process today and forgot to take any pictures of the progress, silly me. It was a good move overall with the three van loads completed by lunchtime. Obviously we have also been negotiating logistics with the Environment Agency workers who have been busy dredging the river. We will be open on Good Friday and now have much tidying and shelf sorting to carry out, plus other stands from suppliers and products coming into the shop. We are looking forward to retailing from that location very much and hope it will see our business improve. We welcome any feedback.

Hebden Bridge Duck Race 2016

Hebden Bridge Duck Race 2016

Just had an interesting chat with a Hebden Bridge Round Table representative who explained that the footfall around Hebden was a lot less than last year and there were a lot of Duck Race Tickets left to sell, especially as the amount of Ducks in the digger bucket has increased from 8,000 to 10,000

The Hebden Bridge Duck Race is a great event and last year it was amazingly busy in Hebden Bridge and also very warm, with Easter earlier this year and also the number of people in Hebden Bridge being generally lower due to the terrible flooding on Boxing Day, the Rotary Club are concerned that ticket sales may be lower. The good news is that you no longer have to live in or near Hebden Bridge to get a ticket, you cam now buy tickets online from the Hebden Bridge Rotary Duck race page here

Please buy a ticket or two to support the cause which you can do online or from shops and sellers in Hebden Bridge

Silly Billy’s re-opening

Silly Billy’s IS re-opening

We are re-opening at our new location of Old Gate House this Good Friday 25th March, we hope very much you will like our new shop as much as we do.
Silly Billy's Old Gate

Bill has been tirelessly co-ordinating workmen, varnishing woodwork, working on suppliers for assistance and all manner of actions to get the shop open as quickly as possible. Our shop fitters have been amazingly efficient so thanks to Johnathan and Neil for their sterling efforts, and thanks also to the construction guys at the site who have helped us as well with getting works done for the opening next week.

Unfortunately our Vinyl Decal’s for the large window display have had some  delays and will not be ready in time. Nevertheless we are happy to be working with all4design on the new look.

The World’s Happiest Countries Have Been Revealed

Who cares about high taxes and cold winters when you’ve got Lego’s, green energy and pastries? The fourth World Happiness Report is out, and Denmark has topped the tables once again.

Denmark’s chirpiness comes as no surprise. Western Europe has previously dominated the top of their past happiness reports. In addition, Denmark was ranked first in  Happiness Report and third in 2015.

In order, the countries following Denmark were Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, and then Sweden. The top 10 contains the exact same countries as the report in 2015, albeit in a different order.

The least happy countries in the study were Burundi, Syria, Togo, Afghanistan, Benin, Rwanda, Guinea, and Liberia.

In total, the study looked at 157 different countries. Each country’s happiness was measured using six variables: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, social freedom, generosity, and perception of corruption. The scores of these six factors were then compared  hypothetical country that contained all of the worst scores. This acted as a benchmark for the worst possible country.

Measuring self-reported happiness and achieving well-being should be on every nations agenda as they begin to pursue the Sustainable Development Goals, said Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, who contributed to the report.

Indeed, the Goals themselves embody the very idea that human well-being should be nurtured through a holistic approach that combines economic, social and environmental objectives.

Rather than taking a narrow approach focused solely on economic growth, we should promote societies that are prosperous, just, and environmentally sustainable.

Environmental sustainability certainly seems to be a big one for Denmark. Not only were they listed alongside the U.K. as the top country for combating climate change, this year they’ve also broken their own world record for wind power generation and opened the worlds first ugly and expired food supermarket.

The report was released in anticipation of the UNs World Happiness Day on March 20. You can read the entire study online right here.

The New Silly Billy’s

The All New Silly Billy’s in Old Gate

After some time negotiating contracts and other such legalities we are finally on full pace with Silly Billy’s new shop fitting out. Employing a local carpenter we are making some simple shelving, maximising the space and designing our own counter. We very much hope to be open within the next two weeks.
Being open for the Easter Holidays is our aim, our suppliers have been great and sent us some display units, we are going to get some graphic vinyls applied to our huge window and we are looking forward to retailing from our new location and a brand new shop in Hebden Bridge. which will be at:

Silly Billy’s Toy Shop
Old Gate House
Old Gate
Hebden Bridge

The support we have received from the public and from suppliers has been fantastic and we will write a thank-you post later after we have opened.

As you can imagine we have a great deal of work to do. Bill is busy varnishing shelves this weekend and we are trading from our Pop Up Shop in Welcome Independent Living at the bottom of Albert Street in Hebden Bridge as well.

Slat Wall
For Hanging Toys

As well as us being busy in our New Shop we noticed the Environment Agency were also pretty active getting some rubble out of the River, which will help the rubber ducks move down stream during the Hebden Bridge Duck Race, however the impact it may have at reducing floods is questionable (in the author’s humble opinion)

Mad Musical Genius Builds New Instrument Using 2,000 Marbles

Swedish musician Martin Molin has always had a fascination with weird instruments like the glockenspiel or the Theremin. Perhaps it was this fascination with the bizarre that led him to create what may well be the most insanely awesome instrument I’ve ever seen: the Wintergatan Marble Machine. The Marble Machine is a hand-cranked monstrosity of a music box that features a vibraphone, a bass guitar, kick drum, cymbals, and a host of other instruments. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention the intricately complex system of 2,000 cascading steel marbles (technically ball bearings, but whatever)?

As he spins the crank, those 2,000 marbles make their way through the inner workings of a machine with around 3,000 internal parts, activating various instruments as they go. Additionally, there is a central wheel made of LEGO Technic parts that plays a score programmed onto a 32-bar loop. All in all, it’s a machine that would probably make Rube Goldberg’s head spin, and Molin plays it masterfully.

According to Molin, he got the idea from stumbling upon the subculture of marble machines, but wanted to make his version fully programmable. He set aside two months of time for it in August of 2014, but quickly realized it’d take a lot longer. All told, it took 14 months to build the whole thing. Molin crafted most of the parts on the fly, which is why it looks as Frankenstein-ish as it does. As cool as the machine is, it’s sadly staying in place for now – it’d have to be totally disassembled in order to move it.

Deadpool fans really want him to host ‘Saturday Night Live’

More than 25,000 people have signed a petitionasking for Deadpoolto host Saturday Night Live.

No, not the actor Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool, the fictional character.

This kind of petition is not exactly rare, and most of them have no impact whatsoever. But with Deadpoolwell, just think about it for a minute. He’s basically the perfect host. Reynolds has spent countless hours filming PSAs and tie-in videosas Deadpool, and the character’s fourth-wall-breaking antics would be perfect for SNL‘s studio audience. It’s a totally plausible idea.

When actors visit the SNL set, they usually do at least one sketch related to their most famous role. With Deadpool, you’d just have Deadpool playing every part, wearing a second costume over his regular Deadpool costume. A few months ago, this would have seemed like a ridiculously niche joke for Marvel fans, but after Deadpool‘s runaway success this week, who knows?

There’s a good chance that SNL showrunner Lorne Michaels will never see this petition, but if he does, he should read this section:

“I have not watched a full episode of SNL in years because I just haven’t been able to stomach an entire episode, but having Deadpool host, star, and be all over the episode would get the DVR set so I can watch it again and again!!!”

Deadpoolfamously did very, very well at the box office over its opening weekend. By capitalizing on its success,SNL could attract new viewerspeople who either never watch the show or only occasionally catch clips onYouTube.

Online petitions should always be taken with a pinch of salt, but this one is an undeniably great idea.
